Somjit Jongjohor landed his biggest prize in the final fight of his career, but Manus Boonjumnong failed to become Thailand's first two-time Olympic champion when the two fighters contested the boxing finals at the Beijing Olympics on Saturday night.

Somjit overpowered Andris Laffita of Cuba. He held up a picture of His Majesty the King before the world immediately after his victory, and also announced his retirement from the ring. ประกาศอำลาวงการ
The Thai boxer opened up a 6-0 lead after two rounds with effective counter-punching, using his speed to stay out of harm's way and then kept out of trouble in the last two rounds.
"All my life I've been waiting for today. I went through so much, hurt so much but I have tried my hardest," said Somjit.
The 33-year-old Buri Ram province native, who also was world champion in 2003, said the Olympic triumph will be the last fight of his career. He dedicated(มอบเป็นของขวัญ) the gold medal victory to his son, Kampan, whose birthday was also on Saturday.
His Cuban opponentคู่ต่อสู้ paid him some tribute. "I knew this bout was going to be very hard," said Laffita. "He's a good boxer, although I think that either one of us could have won."
Somjit credited his success to hard work.
"For the past 12 years I've been through many obstacles. If I didn't fight through those challenges, then I'd just be a normal boxer," said Somjit.
"Everyone who puts in effort on the job that they do can become a success like me."
Manus, the defending champion who won gold at the 2004 Athens Games, lost the final to a better boxer in Felix Diaz of the Dominican Republic.
In a brawling(การต่อสู้) four rounds, Diaz continuously beat the Thai to the punch(การชก), scoring heavily with rights to the head and a series of body blows. Diaz pulled away in the third round and Manus never rallied.(ฟื้นตัว)
Diaz went into the fight as underdog(เป็นรอง) but refused to be roughed up (โจมตี) by his Thai opponent. The Dominican eventually (ในที่สุด) gained the upper hand in the third round, outscoring the Thai 8-1 and forcing him to take a standing count thanks to a flush(กระปี้กะเปร่า) left hook.
Manus was a shadow of the fighter who beat Cuba's Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo in his semi-final bout Friday and Diaz could even afford a spot of showboating to the crowd in the final round as he cruised to a 12-4 points win.
The Diaz victory was only the second gold medal the Dominican Republic has ever won at the Olympics, and the the first gold medal in boxing. The country of 10 million people shares the Carribean island of Hispaniola with Cuba,
